DESCRIPTION:Led by Steve Wright\, Director of Horticulture and Curator of Plant Collections at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens \nOffered to our Patron\, Sustaining\, and Circle of Friends level Jenkins Arboretum members only \nAs the Arboretum looks to its future\, we evaluate opportunities to allow access into areas of the property that are currently private\, but have enormous potential. We would like to extend an invitation to our membership to join our Board of Directors on an annual tour of the “Conservation Woodlands” on the Browning Hillside. You may have admired from afar our efforts to restore parts of this area and now is your chance to see it all up close. We will be offering simple refreshments and even a secret (edible) treat. DESCRIPTION:Led by Tara Vent\, Hamilton Educational Fellow \nLearn how to repurpose your kitchen and garden scraps to use as botanical dyes! In this workshop\, participant will learn which fabrics\, materials\, and techniques work best. DESCRIPTION:Led by Hope Marshall\, Milena Trosini\, and Jean Thorpe\, Arboretum volunteers \nWould you like to create your own unique gift bags for that special person? Join Jenkins volunteers\, Hope Marshall\, Milena Trosini\, and Jean Thorpe\, to learn how to turn recycled materials including newsprint\, circulars\, and brochures into a variety of gift bags and tags just in time for the hostess gifts you will be bringing to holiday parties or for your friends and family birthdays. You will leave this workshop with at least 3 bags of varying sizes and the know-how to continue making them at home. All recycled materials will be provided. Please bring a few sharpened pencils\, a ruler\, and a single hole punch (if you have one). Also\, you are welcome to bring your own recycled materials including greeting cards\, circulars\, or catalogs and ribbon or cord to use as handles. \nFree for members\, $5 for non-members\nPre-registration required. Class size is limited.

SUMMARY:Spray and Pray
DESCRIPTION:Misguided faith in pesticides isn’t the answer to our mosquito and tick problems.\nPresented by Dan Duran\, PhD\, associate professor\, Department of Biodiversity\, Earth and Environmental Science\, Drexel University \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Dan Duran will discuss the efficacy of common methods used to control these backyard pests. He will also address the environmental implications of the various methods. Dr. Duran in an engaging speaker whose energetic lecture style is appreciated by his students as well as the general public. Dr. Duran is an Associate Teaching Professor at Drexel and an adjunct member at the Barnes Foundation Arboretum School. He is also president and co-founder of the non-profit\, Mid-Atlantic Native & Threatened Insect Zoo (MANTIZ). He received a BS in Environmental Science and a Ph.D. in Evolution and Ecology in 2010. He has also worked at the Natural History Museum in London and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. Currently\, he teaches courses about topics pertaining to ecology\, evolution\, insects\, and plants. Dr. Duran is also the co-author of the book\, “A Field Guide to the Tiger Beetles of the United States and Canada\, 2nd Edition.” \nFree of charge. No pre-registration required.\nAll are welcome.

SUMMARY:Houseplant Revival and Repotting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on workshop led by Arboretum horticulture staff and greenhouse volunteers \nBack by popular demand\, the Arboretum’s staff and volunteers are once again offering this workshop to help give new life to some of your neglected old houseplants. We can prune\, clean\, and repot with fresh soil mix (yes\, we can do orchids). We can even give them a shot of fertilizer to get them going. The Arboretum will supply the soil\, fertilizer\, and expertise\, but we ask that participants bring their own containers. So bring your houseplants to the Arboretum for a plant pick-me-up. Note: In most cases\, the containers the plants are currently in will work fine\, but if they need to be bumped into a larger container\, you will need to supply that container. \n$10 per repot maximum 5 repots per person\n(members receive one free repot).\nNo pre-registration required.
