DESCRIPTION:Join us to unravel the long history of environmentalism\, colonialism\, and race.\n\n\nLandscapes of Whiteness: Colonialism\, Exclusion\, and Visions of Nature from the 1830s – 1930s  \nThursday\, August 19\, 7:00 – 8:30pm \nPresented by Elaine Ayers\, PhD\, faculty member\, Program in Museum Studies at NYU \n \nWhat does moss collecting have to do with the expansion of plantation agriculture? How did the founding of Yellowstone National Park contribute to theories of racial extermination and degeneration? How have museums\, botanical gardens\, and other cultural institutions facilitated in racial subjugation since their foundings? Ranging from early-nineteenth century theories of acclimatization to the early-twentieth century eugenic environmental movement\, naturalists have drawn connections between nature and which bodies figure as “natural.” Rooted in colonial violence and systematic exclusion\, many of the fields we consider valuable today—including biogeographical mapping and the American National Parks System—worked hand-in-hand with specious ideas about race\, standardization\, and perceived progress. Unraveling the long history of environmentalism\, colonialism\, and race\, this talk will discuss the complexities of conservation and the continued inequities that continue to plague natural history. \n \nFree of charge; registration is required. Landscape architect\, Jennifer Pennington will discuss principles of ecological landscape management and design\, as well as some common horticultural pitfalls related to site conditions such as poor drainage\, sun and wind exposure\, and invasive weed sources. On Friday\, learn how to evaluate the varied conditions of your property and complete a site analysis plan. After gaining a greater appreciation for the inherent strengths and weaknesses of your site\, explore how to translate your site analysis into a workable landscape plan. A tripod is a helpful tool\, if you have one. The cemeteries continue to serve families in their time of tragedy and loss\, provide beautiful open space for outdoor respite and healthy activity\, and are anchor institutions in the community. Join Mackenzie Knight-Fochs for a virtual visit to explore horticultural highlights of these two cemeteries\, including a one-of-a-kind rock garden\, a SITES Gold landscape for green burials\, State Champion trees\, and the final resting places of notable horticulturists.  \n \nFree of charge; registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a two-day landscape photography class\n\n\nFall Landscape Photography\n \nA two-day class: Friday\, October 29\, 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, Saturday\, October 30\, 8:00 am – 1:00 pm\n \n(Rain dates: November 5 and 6)\n \nPresented by Laura Ducceschi\, Fine Art Photographer\n \n \nHave you been frustrated trying to photograph beautiful landscapes? Creating landscape images is a challenge! Skies are bright and the foreground relatively dark. Special strategies are needed to enable cameras to capture the wide range of tones that take our breath away when in an amazing landscape setting. The warm colors of autumnal foliage provide the perfect opportunity to learn and practice skills for creating beautiful photographs.\n \n \nAward-winning photographer Laura Ducceschi will illustrate some of the challenges and solutions to creating impactful landscape and outdoor photographs\, including equipment\, camera settings\, and composition.  Friday evening begins with indoor instruction\, preparing for shooting out in the gardens on Saturday morning. The class will wrap up with a chance to share images from the morning.\n \n \nParticipants need to bring their own camera with which they have some familiarity. Cameras with interchangeable lenses will have the features needed to take full advantage of the class. It is important to bring a fully charged battery and a camera card with space to shoot freely. A tripod is strongly recommended. Some activities are not applicable to point-and-shoot cameras.\n \n \nMembers: $60; Non-Members: $70\n \nRegistration required.
