SUMMARY:Colored Pencil & Pastel Dust on Coquille Board
DESCRIPTION:Led by Scott Rawlins\, Artist\, Scientific Illustrator and Designer\nCo-sponsored by Jenkins Arboretum  & Gardens and the Philadelphia  Society of Botanical Illustrators \nCoquille board is a textured paper that reduces drawn lines to a stipple-like pattern resembling a mezzotint.  Black and white drawings on coquille board are executed as if they were tonal but can be reproduced as line –  which is a real time saver for those who work slowly!  It is also possible to use colored media on coquille board.   “Thin” media such as pastel and colored pencil will adhere to the surface adequately without destroying its distinguishing texture.  This combination of media produces results that resemble tinted stipple drawings. Scott Rawlins graduated from Earlham College with a degree in biology\, and holds graduate degrees in museum education and medical & biological illustration from the George Washington University and the University of Michigan respectively. \nScott is a Professor at Arcadia University where he teaches scientific illustration and design. He regularly exhibits his artwork nationally and has served on the boards of the Guild as well as the American Association of Botanical Artists and the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators. His illustrations have appeared in the Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology\, Invertebrate Biology\, Acta Zoologica and Zootaxa as well as many other publications. Scott currently works as a research associate at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. \nPre-registration required. \nFree for Jenkins and PSBI members.  \nClass size limited. $10 for non-members. \nDrawing by Scott Rawlins

SUMMARY:Houseplant Revival and Repotting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on workshop led by Arboretum horticulture staff and greenhouse volunteers \nBack by popular demand\, the Arboretum’s staff and volunteers are once again offering this workshop to help give new life to some of your neglected old houseplants. We can prune\, clean\, and repot with fresh soil mix (yes\, we can do orchids). We can even give them a shot of fertilizer to get them going. The Arboretum will supply the soil\, fertilizer\, and expertise\, but we ask that participants bring their own containers. So bring your houseplants to the Arboretum for a plant pick-me-up. Note: In most cases\, the containers the plants are currently in will work fine\, but if they need to be bumped into a larger container\, you will need to supply that container. \n$10 per repot maximum 5 repots per person\n(members receive one free repot).\nNo pre-registration required.

SUMMARY:Fall Planting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Fall Planting Demonstration\nSaturday\, September 14\, 10:00 – 11:00 am\nLed by Steve Wright\, Director of Horticulture/Curator of Plant Collections at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens.\nFall is a great time for planting\, when the heat of summer has passed but there is still time for newly-planted roots to establish before heaving frosts begin. You can think of late-season planting as a head start on the next year. Steve Wright will begin this program in the John J. Willaman Education Center with a brief slide presentation to show some of the “how-tos” and will then lead the group to an area just outside the Education Center to demonstrate proper planting techniques. You will learn everything you need to know to ensure the survival of your fall plantings.\n$10 for members; $20 for non-members. Registration required.
